Glossary Gun Terms Beginning T and W

TEFLON
Trade name for a synthetic sometimes used to coat hard bullets to protect the rifling. Other synthetics, nylon for instance, have also been used as bullet coatings. None of these soft coatings has any effect on lethality.

TERMINAL BALLISTICS
A sub-field of ballistics, is the study of the behavior of a projectile when it hits its target.

TRIGGER
A mechanism that actuates the firing sequence of a firearm. Triggers almost universally consist of levels or buttons actuated by the index finger.

TRIGGER CONTROL
The proper method of activating the trigger to minimize movement that can misalign the sights.

TRIGGER GUARD
A loop surrounding the trigger of a firearm and protecting it from accidental discharge.

WADCUTTER
A special purpose bullet specially designed for shooting paper targets, usually at close range. They are often used in handgun and airgun competitions. A wadcutter has a flat or nearly flat front that cuts a very clean hole through the paper target, making it easier to score and ideally reducing errors in scoring the target to the favor of the shooter.

WEAPON
Webster defines it as "an instrument of offensive or defensive combat." Thus an automobile, baseball bat, bottle, chair, firearm, fist, pen knife or shovel is a "weapon," if so used.
